Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sorority?A sorority is a group of women bound together by sisterhood and common goals and aspirations. The members that form a sorority share their efforts, friendship and knowledge. Together, these members learn, grow, and make the Greek organization stronger. Their common experience builds ties that last a lifetime. This forms a sisterhood amongst members which helps to develop strong and creative leadership, leading to success. Though there are many different sororities, they all share common founding principles. Greek organizations enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal and social development. The ideals of lifelong friendship, sound education, campus and community service, and social interaction are what Greek members strive to live by every day.

What will a student get out of joining a Greek organization that they won't get from other groups?Greek organizations are a great way for students to make an easier transition into college from home, parents and high school friends. For most students, Greek life becomes a home away from home. It becomes a place where close, lifelong friendships are created. Most of these groups emphasize leadership, scholarship, service, and fellowship among other important values.

How will joining a sorority/fraternity help me after college?Membership in sororities and fraternities is a great source of professional networking, no matter the profession or industry. Membership also gives you lifelong friendships and support. Our chapter can attest to this! Many Gammas can testify to how they are the best of friends with their sisters well after college. If you stick around, you may notice how many of our alumni are also still active in supporting the undergraduate chapter. 1/3 of the United States House of Representatives, 76% of the U.S. Senate, 85% of Supreme Court Justices since 1910, all but 3 U.S. Presidents since 1825, 85% of Fortune 500 key executives and all of the Apollo 11 Astronauts belong to fraternities or sororities.

How can I decide if going Greek is for me?If you believe that Greek organizations can enhance your collegiate and post-collegiate experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal, and social development, then Greek Life is for you. All Greek organizations strive for the ideals of lifelong friendship, a sound education, campus and community service, and social interaction. When determining which chapter is for you, look at the motto, mission statement, founding ideals/principles, and the philanthropic involvement of the organization. Reaching out to members of the organization to make connections can also help you decide if they are an appropriate fit for you.

Are you exclusively a Hispanic/Latina sorority?Though we have Latin-founded roots (the founders of the organization were Latina!) Sigma Lambda Gamma is currently recognized as a multicultural sorority and pride ourselves as such! You will see we are not all Hispanic or Latina.
-
Do you only accept Latina/Hispanic women?Nope! While we were founded as a Latina-based sorority, we are proud to be one of the few sororities to truly be MULTICULTURAL! We accept women of all racial backgrounds and ethnicities and only base your acceptance on your drive and passion to become a sister!
-
Do you have to be AFAB (assigned female at birth) to join SLG?Nope! Sigma Lambda Gamma welcomes all self-identifying women and non-binary individuals! Our policy prevents exclusion and/or discharge of transgender members regardless of legal gender designation. This policy is not intended to change the character of SLG nor to waive the rights under Title IX. As such, SLG is open to and will not deny membership to women based on legal designation or sex assigned at birth. Entities will not ask any individuala to provide proof of gender or sex assigned at birth.
-
Do you haze?SLG is a non-hazing sorority. Not only is hazing against the law, but it goes against our morals and ethics. We do not feel that acceptance into a sisterhood requires any kind of hazing. We take hazing seriously and do not condone any kind of hazing to sisters, or any other sororities or fraternities.
-
What if I do not drink, does that matter?Drinking is neither required nor promoted by the sorority and fraternity community. Although social events involving alcohol do occur, they are not the central focus of any organization.

How much time will a student have to put into a Greek chapter?Like most things in life, one will get out whatever they put into their Greek organization. The first year in a Greek chapter will take a little more time to get adjusted to the organization, procedures, and membership. In SLG, all members take on some form of leadership position to help the chapter run smoothly. There will also be plenty of opportunities to network, participate in activities to get to know the other members, engage with other Greeks from other organizations, and more! These are great ways to enjoy the benefits of Greek life as well as meet new people. The first year can be a bit of an adjustment for any new member of a Greek org, but after the first year, students have usually figured out how much time they can put into the group without sacrificing their other commitments.

I bet its expensive, right?Wrong, we are all students. We understand what you go through and how tough it is to make ends meet, we work with you... Just ask!
