Breast Cancer Awareness
Sigma Lambda Gamma and its member groups actively support the important societal issue of Breast Cancer Awareness. Our support of this cause comes in various avenues: from fundraising campaigns; educational workshops to create awareness; active participation in run/walk events; volunteer participation with organizations; or a combination of these forms.
The Pi Epsilon Chapter holds events each year in the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month in support of raising awareness about Breast Cancer. After spending some time researching about the most meaningful ways to make an impact in the community of those who experience breast cancer, we discovered that society HAS created awareness. It is now time to educate others on the actual needs of people with breast cancer, which is why we began a fundraiser to educate our community about the harm of Pinkwashing and donate 100% of the proceeds to METAvivor, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of advanced breast cancer and equity and research in patient support.
Pinkwashing
"Pinkwashing, as defined by the Breast Cancer Consortium, is the act of supporting the breast cancer cause or promoting a pink ribbon product while producing, manufacturing, or selling products linked to the disease. In recent years, the definition has expanded to include a darker side of pinkwashing; companies and organizations that exploit breast cancer for profit or public relations."
The Pi Epsilon Chapter also holds signature events each year including our Bump It For Breast Cancer fundraising volleyball tournament and our In It to End It Series. The In It to End IT Series includes our Breast Cancer Survivor Panel where we provide space for individuals who have been previously diagnosed with breast cancer to educate the attendees, students of The Ohio State University, about their experiences with breast cancer. Each year we are provided with extremely valuable knowledge about how to detect breast cancer early and about how important it is to be familiar with our bodies and advocate for ourselves when we know something doesn't feel right.
